Frequently asked questions about studying in Germany from Nepal

Can Nepali students study in Germany for free in 2026?
Public universities in 15 of 16 German states charge no tuition fees for Nepali students, only a semester contribution of EUR 70-430 that usually bundles a regional transport pass. Baden-Wurttemberg is the exception, charging non-EU students EUR 1,500 per semester. Private universities can charge full tuition. The actual cost is living expenses, currently set at EUR 992 per month by the Auswartiges Amt and pre-deposited in a blocked account before the visa is issued. Our financing post breaks down the full first-year budget.
Do Nepali students need German language for studying in Germany?
It depends on the programme. German-taught degrees require B2 or C1 German, typically TestDaF (TDN 4), DSH-2, Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or OSD C1. English-taught Master's programmes ask for IELTS 6.0-7.0 or TOEFL 80+ and waive the German requirement. Even on English tracks, B1 German makes the visa interview, daily life, and post-degree job search far easier. Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu is the only Goethe centre in Nepal and tests up to C1.
How much money do Nepali students need for a Germany student visa?
Three line items add up. First, the blocked account (Sperrkonto) at EUR 11,904 for 12 months, the floor set by the Auswartiges Amt for 2026. Second, the visa fee at EUR 75, payable at Embassy Kathmandu. Third, health insurance, around EUR 141.16 per month under the TK student tariff from 1 January 2026. Total cash needed before flying out is roughly NPR 18-20 lakh depending on exchange rates and Sperrkonto provider fees.
Is APS verification required for Nepali students applying to Germany?
Not yet. APS Nepal does not exist as of 2026. Nepali academic credentials are sent directly to uni-assist (the centralised application processor) and to the German Embassy Kathmandu for visa-level verification, alongside the original transcripts. Several South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) introduced APS in 2023-2024 and Nepal has been discussed, but no rollout date has been announced. Always check the embassy's site before you submit.
What is the easiest path to permanent residency in Germany for Nepali graduates?
The fastest practical route is graduate Skilled Worker or EU Blue Card. A German degree shortens the Niederlassungserlaubnis clock to 24 months on the Skilled Worker permit (Section 18c(1) sentence 2 AufenthG, B1 German required), or 21 months on the Blue Card with B1 (27 months with only A1). The 2026 Blue Card salary threshold drops to EUR 45,934.20 for any role taken within three years of a German degree, which is well below most STEM and finance starting salaries.
Can a Nepali graduate become a German citizen?
Yes, after 5 years of lawful residence (down from 8 under the 2024 StARModG reform), with B1 German, a pass on the Einburgerungstest, and a self-sufficient income. Germany allows dual citizenship since 27 June 2024. However, Nepal does not recognise dual citizenship under its 2006 Citizenship Act, so a Nepali who naturalises in Germany loses Nepali citizenship by operation of Nepali law. Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) status preserves economic and social rights in Nepal but not political ones. The Post 9 deep-dive covers this in detail.
