C2 German: what it unlocks in Germany
C2 is the top of the CEFR scale: near-native mastery of German. It sits above every standard admission and immigration bar, so its value is not clearing a requirement but proving the highest proficiency. The Goethe C2 (Grosses Deutsches Sprachdiplom) entitles university study and is recognized as evidence of the competence needed to teach German.

Overview
What C2 gets you
C2 is the highest of the six CEFR levels. At this level you understand virtually everything you read or hear without effort, can summarize information from different spoken and written sources into a coherent account, and express yourself spontaneously with precision and subtle nuance, even in complex situations. In practice it is near-native command of German.
Because C1 already satisfies German university admission and B1 already meets the settlement and citizenship bar, C2 is rarely a requirement. Its value is different: it is the level you reach when you need to prove mastery rather than sufficiency. The Goethe-Institut confirms that the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 (Grosses Deutsches Sprachdiplom) entitles foreign students to study at a German university, and that it is recognized as evidence of the language competence needed to teach German across Germany.
C2 is most relevant for teaching German, translation and interpreting, academic and research work, editing and publishing, and any role where the highest standard of written and spoken German sets you apart. If your goal is study, work, or settlement rather than one of these expert paths, C1 or B1 is the level to target first, with C2 as an optional capstone.
