Overview

What C1 unlocks

C1 represents advanced, independent proficiency: the ability to understand a wide range of demanding texts, express ideas fluently, and use German effectively in academic and professional contexts. This is why most German-taught university programs place the admission bar here.

DAAD guidance confirms that C1, evidenced by DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4, is the standard requirement for German-taught bachelor's and master's programs. Academic and research roles at German institutions similarly expect C1. Some regulated professions such as medicine and law may require a dedicated Fachsprachprufung (professional language exam) on top of C1.

English-taught programs generally require no German at all. A small number of bachelor's programs do admit students at B2, but this is an exception rather than the rule, and planning toward C1 from the start keeps all options open.

Certification

How to certify C1

The following exams certify C1 and are recognized for university admission in Germany:

  • DSH-2
  • TestDaF (TDN 4 in all four sections)
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2
  • telc C1 Hochschule
  • OESD C1

TestDaF and DSH are the most commonly required exams at German universities. Goethe C1, telc C1 Hochschule, and OESD C1 are widely accepted as well, though individual universities may have their own lists. Always confirm on the program's admissions page.
