Goethe B2 Schreiben: Writing Practice and Model Answers

Goethe B2 Schreiben gives you 75 minutes to write two texts: a Forumsbeitrag of about 150 words in the first part and a semi-formal Mitteilung of about 100 words in the second. There is no gap-fill or multiple choice here, only free writing that an examiner scores against fixed criteria, so the whole module rewards structure, clear opinions, and correct register far more than long, complicated sentences. What the Goethe B2 Schreiben section actually contains

The B2 writing module is two tasks in 75 minutes, and the split is officially fixed: roughly 50 minutes for the first task and 25 for the second. Both are free production, so you write the text yourself and an examiner rates it on content, structure, vocabulary, and grammar. Teil 1 is a Forumsbeitrag, an opinion contribution to an online discussion. Teil 2 is a Mitteilung, a short semi-formal message to someone you know in a work or study context.

Plan your time to that split. Fifty minutes for the Forumsbeitrag sounds generous, but a real argument needs planning, then writing, then a read-through for umlauts, endings, and verb position. Twenty-five minutes for the Mitteilung is enough only if you know your opening and closing formulas cold. Teil 1: a full model Forumsbeitrag at B2

A B2 Forumsbeitrag is not a free-flowing essay. It is a short, structured argument: you take a clear position, give two or three reasons with an example, acknowledge the other side, and close. The examiner is looking for exactly that shape. Here is a task and a model answer of about 150 words.

Aufgabe: In einem Online-Forum wird diskutiert: "Immer mehr Menschen kaufen online statt im Geschäft. Ist das eine gute Entwicklung?" Schreiben Sie Ihren Beitrag.

In der Diskussion um das Online-Shopping vertrete ich klar den Standpunkt, dass der Einkauf im Internet vor allem Vorteile bringt.

Meiner Ansicht nach ist der größte Pluspunkt die Zeitersparnis. Wer berufstätig ist, kann abends in Ruhe bestellen, ohne durch überfüllte Geschäfte zu hetzen. Ein Beispiel aus meinem Alltag: Letzte Woche habe ich ein Buch bestellt, das kein Laden in meiner Stadt vorrätig hatte, und es kam schon nach zwei Tagen an.

Natürlich gibt es auch Nachteile. Die kleinen Geschäfte in den Innenstädten leiden unter der Konkurrenz, und viele müssen schließen. Diese Entwicklung finde ich bedenklich, weil dadurch das Stadtbild ärmer wird.

Trotzdem überwiegen für mich die Vorteile. Wichtig ist nur, dass wir bewusst einkaufen und ab und zu auch die Läden vor Ort unterstützen. So lässt sich beides verbinden.

Notice the skeleton: one sentence for the position, a paragraph per reason with a concrete example, a paragraph that concedes a real drawback, and a closing that resolves the tension instead of repeating the opening. That structure is what turns a pile of true sentences into a text an examiner can score highly on content and cohesion.

Teil 2: a full model Mitteilung at B2

The Mitteilung is shorter and more practical. You write about 100 words to someone in a work or study setting, so the register is semi-formal: "Sie", a friendly but polite opening, and a clear reason for writing. The task gives you two or three points you must cover, and every point has to appear, or you lose content marks. Here is a task and a model answer of about 100 words.

Aufgabe: Am Donnerstag findet in Ihrer Firma eine Fortbildung statt, an der Sie nicht teilnehmen können. Schreiben Sie eine Mitteilung an Ihre Kollegin Frau Weber. Erklären Sie, warum Sie fehlen, bitten Sie um Notizen und schlagen Sie eine Gegenleistung vor.

Liebe Frau Weber,

wie Sie wissen, findet am Donnerstag die Fortbildung zum neuen Computerprogramm statt. Leider kann ich nicht teilnehmen, weil ich an diesem Tag einen wichtigen Arzttermin habe, den ich schon vor Wochen vereinbart habe.

Deshalb wollte ich Sie um einen Gefallen bitten: Könnten Sie sich während der Schulung ein paar Notizen machen und mir danach die wichtigsten Punkte weitergeben? Gern revanchiere ich mich, sobald Sie einmal meine Unterstützung brauchen.

Three things make this a B2 answer rather than a B1 one: the register stays consistent ("Sie", polite but not stiff), every required point is covered in order, and the sentences use B2 structures like a "weil"-clause, a polite "Könnten Sie", and a "Falls"-conditional. You do not need long sentences, just the right ones, correctly built.

The Redemittel that carry a B2 text

Half the battle in B2 writing is having ready-made phrases so your minutes go to ideas, not to inventing structures. Learn a small, reliable set for each function and reuse them.

Stating and supporting an opinion (Teil 1)

Semi-formal openings and closings (Teil 2)

• Opening: Liebe Frau ... / Lieber Herr ... (semi-formal, with "Sie")
• Reason: ich schreibe Ihnen, weil ... / wie Sie wissen, ...
• Request: Könnten Sie ...? / Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie ... könnten.
• Closing: Vielen Dank im Voraus und viele Grüße.
• More formal alternative: Mit freundlichen Grüßen.

The one rule that never bends: keep the register consistent across the whole message. Do not open with a formal "Sehr geehrte" and drift into casual "du" or slang. The examiner marks appropriacy, and a mixed register costs you even when the grammar is clean.

What examiners reward, and the traps at B2

Both tasks are scored on the same criteria: how fully you cover the content, how well the text is organised and connected, the range and accuracy of your vocabulary, and your grammar. Candidates who lose marks rarely fail on ideas; they fail on execution. Watch these traps.

• Skipping a required point. In the Mitteilung especially, every bullet in the task must appear. Miss one and you cap your content score no matter how good the German is.
• No visible structure in Teil 1. A wall of opinion with no position, no example, and no conclusion reads as B1. Signpost with the Redemittel above so the argument is easy to follow.
• Word count off target. A 90-word Forumsbeitrag looks thin; a 220-word one wastes time you needed for Teil 2 and adds errors. Aim near 150 and 100, not far above.
• Register slips. Mixing formal and casual in the Mitteilung, or writing the forum post like a text message, both cost appropriacy marks.
• No read-through. Umlauts, capital letters on nouns, and verb-final position in subordinate clauses are the errors examiners see most. Two minutes of checking recovers real points.

How to practise B2 writing so it holds under time

Writing improves through corrected repetition, not through reading about writing. Build a routine you can actually sustain.

• Collect topics. Keep a list of common Forumsbeitrag themes: technology, environment, work-life balance, social media, city versus countryside. Write one 150-word post a week on a fresh topic.
• Time yourself honestly. Do Teil 1 in 50 minutes and Teil 2 in 25, on paper, no dictionary. The pressure is the point.
• Reuse your Redemittel. Pick five phrases per function and use them until they are automatic, so exam-day minutes go to ideas.
• Get it corrected. Mark your own recurring errors, endings, verb position, umlauts, and keep an error log so the same mistake does not survive to the next text.

Timing and pass mark reality

B2 is modular. Schreiben is booked and certified separately from Lesen, Hören, and Sprechen, and you pass each module on its own. To pass Schreiben you need 60 of 100 points. Your total across both tasks is scaled to that 100, so a strong Forumsbeitrag can carry a weaker Mitteilung and the other way round, but you cannot ignore either. The grade bands are the same at every level.

Because the module is modular, if you miss 60 in Schreiben you retake only Schreiben, not the whole exam. That makes targeted writing practice worth far more than general revision: it is the fastest way to move a single module across the line.
