Frequently asked questions
Which Goethe level do I need?
It depends on your goal. B1 is the common threshold for many residence and citizenship purposes, while most German-taught university programmes expect C1-level proof. See the study pathway requirements to match a level to your plan, and start with the levels overview.
How are the Goethe exams scored?
Every level is scored out of 100 points and you need 60 to pass. From B1 upward the exam is modular, so each module (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen) is scored separately and you retake only the one you miss.
Are Goethe exams modular?
B1, B2, C1, and C2 are modular: you can book and pass the four modules separately or together. A1 and A2 are not modular and are taken as a whole exam.
